Towing Tips

These tips have been accumulated over 25 years through thousands of conversations with people who have towed vehicles 4 wheels down behind a MH. REMCO believes they are true and accurate based on these conversations.

  • Be careful when towing on thick gravel or sand in a parking lot-sometimes the front tires on your toad will turn in the opposite direction you are headed-(so you are in effect dragging the car through the gravel) the only way the wheels will straighten out is to stop the MH and get out and turn the steering wheel in the direction you are headed.
  • Never tow in snow or ice
  • Never back up, because the toad can jackknife so quickly you won't be able to see the toad to respond (it could also damage the tow bar and mounting hardware).
  • Always use safety cables or chains between the toad and MH in case the tow bar separates from the toad-always attach the safety cables to the frame of the MH and the frame of the toad.
  • Never tow faster than 100 MPH-stay within posted speed limits so you don't get a ticket.
  • You can tow any front wheel drive manual transmission vehicle as far as you want and as long as you want.
  • Most 4WD vehicles with a manual transmission, manual transfer case and manual lock out hubs can be towed on all four wheels safely with no problems-if the 4WD has no manual lockout hubs and/or no manual transfer case you will need a REMCO DS coupling on the rear drive shaft to tow it safely.
  • Most auto manufacturers will not give you a straight answer about towing their vehicles because they have not done any testing. If they do give you an answer, it will probably be wrong or negative because they don't want to get involved or they don't know the correct answer, so they will tell you the vehicle cannot be towed because of lawsuits.
  • If a salesman or auto company says your vehicle is towable on all 4 wheels, get it in writing. That way if you do have a transmission problem and you are 500 miles away from home you can call them and ask them where to send the bill.
  • REMCO MFG does carry a complete line of tow bars, base plates, safety cable and tail light wiring kits with diodes. Call REMCO MFG toll free at 800.228.2481 for more information.
  • If you can't see your toad while towing, (the vehicle is too low) get a magnetic base CB antennae from Radio Shack, put it on your trunk lid with a red flag and you will have something to watch through your MH's rear view mirror.
  • If you plan to tow any distance, your MH transmission oil gets super hot and will start to break down quickly. So, we would recommend you get a transmission oil cooler installed on your MH. A trans. cooler only costs about $100-150 installed and you will increase the life of the MH transmission. It's cheaper than a new transmission.
  • For safety reasons, the tow bar on your toad, and the hitch on the MH should all be rated as Class III (5,000 lbs) or more. If you don't know for sure call the manufacturers of the hitch or MH.
  • Do not attach a tow bar directly to the bumper on your toad unless you are also attaching to the frame. Most newer cars have so much plastic, and a shock absorber mounting, you cannot safely attach to the bumper by itself.
  • Make sure that you use diodes to install the tail light wiring from the MH to the toad. Diodes will prevent feedback problems. REMCO does have diodes available in our wiring kit or individually.
  • When towing a vehicle over 3,000 lbs you should think about a braking system on your toad for safety. Having the toad behind your MH will increase the stopping distance of the MH by 50-70%. REMCO has a hydraulic/surge braking system available.
  • The only vehicle that we don't recommend towing is a Suburu. The reason is because they do not track well. Suburu has a different camber and castor in the alignment setup that doesn't let it track well. People have told us that the newer Suburus do tow OK but we don't know for sure. Suburu also says their "Outback" is towable as is.
  • When towing, the tow bar should be as level as possible to the ground. The new tow bars that go on the back of the MH can have as much as 6 inches difference in height between the back of the MH and the front on the car.
